National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Maps for an area impacted by Hurricane Katrina

This post shows some of the floodplain maps for an area impacted by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

An introductory explanation of floodplain maps is given in a previous post:

The maps for any address (or latitude and longitude coordinates) can be found at the website below.

The front panel of the maps will provide information including the map date.

Base flood elevations and cross section lines are shown on the maps.  The legend for these items is shown below.  However, it should be noted on the maps for this area that there are no defined cross sections shown on the map.

The floodplain map below shows an area of the Lakeview neighborhood of New Orleans on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain.  There are several zones shown on this map.
  • Zone AE - base floodplain where base flood elevations are provided
  • Shaded Zone X - usually the area between the limits of the 100-year and the 500-year floods
  • Zone VE - coastal areas subject to a velocity hazard (wave action) where BFEs are provided on the map
Notice that the areas closer to the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain are in a shaded zone X.  Some of those areas did not flood during Hurricane Katrina.

There is a good article from Nola.com, the local newspaper in the greater New Orleans area, regarding the timeline of flooding from Hurricane Katrina.  The graphic below is from that article.  That graphic shows the area close to Lake Pontchartrain (between the 17th Street Canal and the Orleans Avenue Canal) that was not flooded.  The article can be found here:

The extent of this floodplain map is roughly from the 17th Street Canal (note that the 17th Street Canal is not shown on the map;  the left edge of the map is basically the eastern levee of the 17th Street Canal) to the Orleans Avenue Canal (this canal is shown on the map).  The levee break that occurred in this area was located on the 17th Street Canal levee near the northern end of the canal on the Lakeview side.  During the time of Hurricane Katrina, the canal had a direct link to Lake Pontchartrain.  There is now a closure structure with pumps at the northern end of the 17th Street Canal.
