Savannah River System Reservoirs during Hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma made landfall in Florida on September 10, 2017.  This post details impacts on three reservoirs on the Savannah River system.

The three reservoirs are Hartwell, Richard B. Russell, and J. Strom Thurmond.  The locations of these reservoirs are shown in the figure below.  All three of these projects have hydropower as a project purpose.

7-day QPFs are shown below for the following time periods:

September 8, 2017 at 8:00 pm to September 15, 2017 at 8:00 pm.
September 9, 2017 at 8:00 pm to September 16, 2017 at 8:00 pm.

The figure below shows the rainfall measurement at Hartwell Lake.  About 2 inches of rainfall occurred at this location from Hurricane Irma.

The top of conservation at Hartwell Lake is 660.0 feet.  Prior to Hurricane Irma, Hartwell Lake was in its conservation pool.  The impact from Hurricane Irma was small with a rise of only a few tenths of a foot.

The figure below shows the rainfall measurement at Russel Lake.  Hurricane Irma produced about 2.5 inches of rainfall at this location.

The figure below shows the pool elevation at Russell Lake.  The top of conservation level at Russell Lake is elevation 475.0 feet.  Russell Lake was in the conservation pool prior to Hurricane Irma and remains in the conservation pool after the passage of the event.

The figure below shows the rainfall measurement at Thurmond Lake.  Hurricane Irma produced just over 2.5 inches of rainfall at this location.

The figure below shows the pool elevation at Thurmond Lake.  The top of conservation pool at Thurmond is 330.0 feet.  The pool was in conservation prior to the passage of Hurricane Irma and remains in the conservation pool after the event.
